Science, 1998A new study appearing on page 860 of this issue of Science concludes that in spite of bans on fishing in certain areas and quotas that limit takes in others, humans are inexorably fishing down marine food webs as larger and more commercially valuable species disappear, creating impoverished, less valuable ecosystems.

Abstract The continuing public concern with overfishing ignores the underlying problems that face fishery mangers. Attention needs to be given to (1) the transitory nature of the ocean environment, (2) the natural variation in fish stocks, (3) the role of the fishing industry and market forces in fishery management, and (4) the failure to focus on ...

Overfishing worse than thought
Nature, 2008The work, presented Tuesday at the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, suggests that for fifteen of twenty tropical island nations and territories examined, subsistence and recreational fishing has gone almost completely unreported over the past half-century. Such fishing actually collects a volume of reef fish at least
