The Impacts of Climate Change on Historic Buildings: Heating and Overheating in the Tower of London

open access: yesEng
The built environment requires retrofitting on a massive scale to both mitigate the impacts of climate change and adapt to future conditions. Buildings of high thermal mass offer useful insights into the limits of passive measures in futureproofing ...

Green and Low‐Carbon Synthesis of Lithium Sulfide (Li2S): From Fundamental Mechanisms to Scalable Manufacturing for Next‐Generation Energy Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review focuses on green synthesis routes for lithium sulfide (Li2S)—a key material for lithium–sulfur batteries and sulfide solid electrolytes, whose traditional carbothermal reduction remains energy‐intensive and unsustainable. Specifically examined routes include low‐temperature solid‐state reactions, magnesiothermal reduction, and solution ...

Monitoring the Microwave Synthesis of d0‐Free Disordered Rocksalt Cathodes Using In Situ Infrared Pyrometry

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Despite its promise for producing metastable materials, the mechanisms underlying solid‐state microwave synthesis remain poorly understood. By combining in situ thermography with x‐ray diffraction and solid‐state NMR, this study uncovers a surprising order–disorder–order reaction pathway during the microwave synthesis of the Li1.1Mn0.9O1.9F0.1${\rm Li ...

Experimental Research on the Influence of Repeated Overheating on the Thermal Diffusivity of the Inconel 718 Alloy

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The Inconel 718 superalloy, a precipitation-hardenable material, is of particular interest for applications involving components operating under extreme conditions due to its excellent mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance at temperatures up ...

Photo‐Gated Corona Microfluidics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Photo‐gated corona microfluidics decouples optical programming from electric‐field actuation to enable reconfigurable manipulation on open, electrode‐pattern‐free surfaces. Near‐infrared irradiation locally melts paraffin, creating a reversible charge‐relaxation pathway that reconstructs the electric field.

On‐Demand Deconstructable Thermosets Through Cleavable Comonomer and Thermolatent Base Synergy

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Thermosets, valued for their chemical and mechanical properties, resist recycling due to their cross‐linked structure. Weak bonds via comonomers enable degradability, but diffusion limits effectiveness. We incorporate thermolatent bases before polymerization (thermal or 3D‐VAT printing).

Overheating in Historic Buildings in the UK: An Exploratory Study of Overheating Risks, Building Performance, and Thermal Comfort

open access: yesHeritage
A study reviewing overheating in historic buildings in the context of extant climate change. Due to global warming, more research is required when considering summertime thermal comfort in the UK, which is a more significant topic of conversation due to ...

Substrate Engineering of SWCNT p–n Junctions for Dual‐Mode Power Generation and Heat‐Flux Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Through substrate engineering alone, a single‐walled carbon nanotube p–n junction device switches between two functions under uniform infrared irradiation. A low‐absorbance substrate sustains a central hot junction for continuous power generation, whereas high‐absorbance substrates transiently invert the temperature gradient for sensitive heat‐flux ...

Natural Sunlight IR‐Driven Highly Efficient Synthesis of Acetaldehyde From Bioethanol Over Cu/Fe2O3

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
This work reports a Cu/Fe2O3 catalyst for the conversion of bioethanol into valuable acetaldehyde and green hydrogen under both infrared (IR) light and natural sunlight. This IR‐driven system sets a new performance benchmark, with TON and initial TOF enhanced by at least one order of magnitude, enabled by a constructed IR photon‐to‐phonon channel and ...

Exploiting Temperature Effects for Robust Control and Reference Circuits Using Thin‐Film Contact‐Controlled Transistors

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Compact circuits based on contact‐controlled transistors are well‐suited to unsupervised thermal management, sensitive temperature measurement, or temperature‐stable current references. Demonstrated on flexible microcrystalline silicon and supported by simulation, the approach does not require supply voltage regulation, remains manufacturable across ...
