Wavelet covariance approach to measure convective boundary‐layer structure

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study introduces a wavelet‐based framework that applies the Haar discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to radiosonde profiles of potential temperature and water vapor mixing ratio for diagnosing convective boundary‐layer (CBL) structure. The method objectively identifies key CBL parameters, including the surface‐layer height, entrainment zone depth ...

Stratospheric influence on tropical cyclone evolution

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We developed a metric based on moist static energy to detect and quantify the intrusion of stratospheric air into the inner core of tropical cyclones. High‐resolution numerical simulations show that this stratospheric interaction forms warm anomalies (high‐level warm cores) in the upper troposphere.

Nowcasting convective cores using deep learning

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Key findings: •$$ \bullet $$ Network for Nowcasting Convective Cores (NetNCC) has considerable potential for convective storm nowcasting and the development of early warning systems for extreme rainfall. •$$ \bullet $$ Skilful nowcasts of convective cores are obtained at fine spatial resolutions (<30km$$ <30\kern0.15em \mathrm{km} $$) for up to 2 hr ...

Optimal Homogeneous ℒp$$ {\boldsymbol{\mathcal{L}}}_{\boldsymbol{p}} $$‐Gain Controller

open access: yesInternational Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Nonlinear ℋ∞$$ {\mathscr{H}}_{\infty } $$‐controllers are designed for arbitrarily weighted, continuous homogeneous systems with a focus on systems affine in the control input. Based on the homogeneous ℒp$$ {\mathcal{L}}_p $$‐norm, the input–output behavior is quantified in terms of the homogeneous ℒp$$ {\mathcal{L}}_p $$‐gain as a ...
