Aspen forest overstory relations to understory production

2011
We examined the relationship between aspen cover and understory production across two topographic positions and two management systems within the Aspen Parkland of eastern Alberta. Understory biomass typically declined with increasing overstory, with greater yield losses on north-facing forests than bottomlands.

Timing Overstory Removal in Longleaf Pine

Journal of Forestry, 1975
Abstract In three studies with longleaf seedlings through 10 years of age, overstory competition sharply reduced growth. Stands developed most rapidly with early release (by seedling age 3), but even when release was delayed until age 8, seedlings responded well to overstory removal.

Overstory mortality as an indicator of forest health in California

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 1996
The interagency Forest Health Monitoring Program involves a network of about 4200 forest plots on a triangular grid across the United States. We present data on recent mortality of trees ≥27.9 cm diameter from the first three years of measurements in California (1992-1994).

Browse Quality Influenced by Tree Overstory in the South

The Journal of Wildlife Management, 1969
Sampled browse plants grown in the open usually contained more crude protein and phos- phorus but less crude fiber and calcium than plants beneath a stand of pines. Leaves contained more crude protein, phosphorus, and calcium than stems, but were lower in crude fiber. Interactions among species, plant parts, and locations were significant.

Overstory and understory competition affect underplanted eastern white pine

Forest Ecology and Management, 1998
Abstract The importance of canopy and understory competition on white pine (Pinus strobus L.) seedlings was evaluated in stands with shelterwood treatments. We sampled 20 stands in north-central Minnesota that were underplanted with white pine 3 to 10 years before sampling.

Overstory spread and intensification of hemlock dwarf mistletoe

Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 1977
Development of dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobiumtsugense (Rosendahl) G.N. Jones) on 51 western hemlock (Tsugaheterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) trees planted in 1963 at varying distances from an infected residual tree is described. Distribution of infections in the planted trees related directly to seed-dispersal patterns, i.e., it was influenced mainly by ...

All of the references to trees in The Overstory

2022
This dataset captures all of the references to trees in Richard Power's The Overstory. Data from the book include page number, section, and sentence the reference appears in. Additional data include, when possible, scientific name, order, family, subfamily, genus, species, and native range.
