Differential Elevational Diversity Between Overstory and Understory in Tropical Forests

open access: yesBiological Diversity, Volume 3, Issue 3, Page 169-179, September 2026.
Tropical forest overstory and understory exhibit contrasting elevational α‐diversity patterns (unimodal vs. bimodal). Community differentiation is driven by species turnover of dominant rather than rare species, highlighting the need for vertically stratified conservation across the full elevational gradient.

Assessing silvopasture management as a strategy to reduce fuel loads and mitigate wildfire risk

open access: yesScientific Reports
Managing private forests for wildfire resilience is challenging due to conflicting social, economic, and ecological decisions that may result in an increase of surface fuel loads leading to greater fire risk.

Joint telemetry and mark–recapture model reveal resource selection affects Northern Bobwhite chick survival

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Resource selection studies have become increasingly common since the advent of modern animal tracking equipment, yet most studies fail to examine how selection affects vital rates or population growth (i.e., fitness). Without investigating if optimal habitat selection is facilitated in a system, conservation efforts may promote ineffective ...

Seasonal variations in the mechanisms of understory herb diversity in a temperate forest in Northeast China

open access: yesEcological Indicators
Herbaceous plants contribute greatly to plant diversity and play an important role in regulating the structure and functioning of forest ecosystems. Comparing with woody species, herbs exhibit higher sensitivity to seasonal changes from spring-growth to ...

Resilience or reassembly: Wildfire–vegetation dynamics in rapidly warming subarctic forests of northwestern Canada

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Climate‐induced shifts in disturbance regimes are reshaping northern forest ecosystems, where tree species are at their geographic range limit. Northern Canada has warmed over twice as much as the mean global increase since 1950, providing a critical context to study climate–fire–vegetation interactions under rapid warming.

Distributed urban forest patch sampling detects edge effects and woodland condition for monitoring and management

open access: yesEcosphere
Urban forest patches, including woodland interiors and bounding edge habitat, result from secondary succession and fragmentation of more extensive forested landscapes in the eastern United States.

Three Decades of Overstory and Species Change in a Mixed Mesophytic Forest in Eastern Kentucky

open access: yes, 2005
The objectives of this study were to document changes, between 1971 and 1999, in overstory vegetation structure and composition at Lilley Cornett Woods (LCW), an old-growth mixed mesophytic forest in eastern Kentucky. Similar to other old-growth forests,
