Accounting for overstrength in seismic design of steel structures

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1998
Observations during many earthquakes have shown that building structures are able to sustain without damage earthquake forces considerably larger than those they were designed for. This is explained by the presence in such structures of significant reserve strength not accounted for in design.

Ductility and overstrength in seismic design of reinforced concrete structures

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1994
The paper first reviews the different approaches taken by codes of practice in their treatment of ductility demand by the use of force modification factors. The way in which structural overstrength affects structural response and the factors influencing overstrength are discussed.

Seismic Overstrength in Braced Frames of Modular Steel Buildings

Journal of Earthquake Engineering, 2008
The seismic behavior factor, R, is a critical parameter in contemporary seismic design. In the 2005 edition of the National Building Code of Canada, the R factor consists of ductility related force modification factor, Rd, and overstrength-related force modification factor, Ro.

Uncertainty Analysis of Flexural Overstrength Ratio for RC Columns

Journal of Structural Engineering, 2012
This paper summarizes the results of a comprehensive statistical study of the flexural overstrength ratio for estimation of the probable flexural strength of ductile RC columns with varying geometries and confinement levels. The material and section properties and the analytical model response are modeled as random variables and their effects on ...

Uncertainly Analysis of Flexural Overstrength for Capacity Design of RC Beams

Journal of Structural Engineering, 2014
AbstractTo ensure an overall ductile structural behavior, the reinforcing steel used in the seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is governed by certain specific requirements given in many international codes, such as the Eurocodes and the recently released Italian Building Code (IBC).

Overstrength of shear links in eccentric braces

2012
The paper presents a study on shear link overstrength, which is defined as the ratio between the peak inelastic and the yield strength. Three basic parameters are devised as generally influencing shear overstrength: (i) axial forces acting on the link, (ii) the ratio of link flange over web area and (iii) the ratio between link length and cross section

Analytical and numerical study of plastic overstrength of shear links

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 2013
Abstract Shear links are widely used in eccentric bracing of steel buildings and, recently, for seismic protection of existing bridges and buildings. Experimental tests carried out for classic eccentric bracing of steel buildings have consistently shown that peak inelastic shear forces up to 1.4–1.5 times the plastic shear strength can develop at ...

Use of overstrength and inelastic response in seismic design

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Structures and Buildings, 2013
Inelastic analysis procedures are more dependable means for predicting the actual seismic response compared with elastic analysis methods. Encouragement to use the former procedures is still limited and designers tend to favour elastic analysis procedures. The permissible reduction in response parameters obtained from elastic analysis unlike those from

Implications of structural overstrength on the calibration of seismic codes

Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, 2011
A computer program is developed to test the influence of the structural overstrength to calibrate seismic codes. The program automatically performs an iterative design-evaluation process to calibrate the seismic code. A numerical example is performed in order to test the different approaches. The virtual simulation shows that the force reduction factor
