The winter 2023/2024 floods in the UK: a hydrological appraisal

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
From October 2023 to March 2024, the UK saw a succession of named storms and low‐pressure weather systems, leading to widespread exceptional river flows throughout. Peak flow records were broken in several catchments, but this event was most notable for its duration and spatial footprint, which resulted in major impacts.

Multi‐Sources and Modes‐Based Overtopping Risk Model for Gravity Dams Under Extreme Working Conditions

open access: yesWater Resources Research
Addressing the limitations of traditional overtopping risk analysis methods, which either consider only a single failure mode or fail to accurately characterize the nonlinear characteristics of reservoir levels, this paper proposes a novel overtopping ...

Physical Modelling of the Effect on the Wave Field of the WaveCat Wave Energy Converter

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2021
The WaveCat is a moored Wave Energy Converter design which uses wave overtopping discharge into a variable v-shaped hull, to generate electricity through low head turbines.

Palaeoglaciations in the Polar and Subpolar Ural Mountains

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The Ural Mountains form a major physiographic boundary between the East European Plain and West Siberia, both repeatedly glaciated during the Pleistocene by the Barents–Kara ice sheet. Although the present‐day topography reflects significant glacial modification, the extent, chronology and interaction of mountain glaciers with the Barents–Kara ice ...

Overtopping of Coastal Structures by Tsunami Waves [PDF]

open access: yesGeosciences, 2017
Following the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, Japanese tsunami protection guidelines stipulate that coastal defences should ensure that settlements are shielded from the coastal inundation that would result from Level 1 tsunami events (with return periods in the order of about 100 years).

Evolution, Routing and Reservoir Characteristics of Submarine Channels in a Structurally Deforming Slope Setting: Deep‐Water Joint Development Zone of Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Geology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Deep‐water slope channels and associated facies are a major part of clastic sediment dispersal system extending from the shelf‐edge to the abyssal plain. The toe‐thrust area of the deep‐water Niger Delta enables the analysis of these channels and their interaction with evolving fault‐controlled sea‐floor topography to be determined ...

Laboratory Experiments on the Influence of the Wave Spectrum Enhancement Factor on a Rubble Mound Breakwater

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2022
This paper experimentally explored the influence of the wave spectrum shape variation on breakwater design. The energy spectrum function generally considered for the design of coastal structures is the JONSWAP spectrum.

Beyond barriers: fish assemblage recovery following dam removal on the Cuyahoga River, a Lake Erie tributary

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Dam removals are increasing globally, yet ecological outcomes vary widely because biological recovery depends on post‐removal connectivity and access to source populations. We evaluated how multiple dam removals and remaining fragmentation influenced fish assemblage recovery in the Cuyahoga River (OH, United States), a historically polluted Great Lakes

Numerical Investigation of Wave Overtopping in Impermeable Seawalls Coated with Sand-Based Porous Media [PDF]

open access: yesNumerical Methods in Civil Engineering
A seawall's structural integrity can be damaged by wave overtopping. To mitigate wave overtopping, this study investigates the effectiveness of incorporating a porous layer into impermeable seawalls.
