Oxidative Torrefaction of Wood Biomass in a Layer of Mineral Filler

Journal of Engineering Physics and Thermophysics, 2021
Consideration is given to a promising approach to heat treatment of biofuel, viz. oxidative torrefaction in a layer of mineral filler. The key features of the proposed technique are the uniformity of heating up the specimen and the possibility of controlling oxidizing processes in the specimen by changing the height of the mineral filler.

Influence of torrefaction on the devolatilization and oxidation kinetics of wood

Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis, 2012
Devolatilization and oxidation kinetics of torrefied wood have been studied by evaluating thermogravimetric curves measured in nitrogen and air at various heating rates. Samples consist of Norway spruce wood chips torrefied at several process temperatures and residence times. Data about untreated wood have also been obtained for comparison.

Development of a Fluidized-Bed Reactor for Oxidative Torrefaction of Biowastes

Thermal Engineering, 2020
Torrefaction is considered as a method for producing biofuels with improved characteristics compared to those of the “raw” biomass (higher calorific value, moisture resistance, better grindability). The torrefaction process is an endothermic process that is usually carried out in a gaseous atmosphere in the absence of oxygen.

Oxidative torrefaction of microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana: Process optimization by central composite design

Bioresource Technology, 2023
Microalgae are currently not viable as solid biofuels owing to their poor raw fuel properties. Torrefaction under oxidative media offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient process to address these drawbacks. A design of experiment was conducted using central composite design with three factors: temperature (200, 250, and 300 °C), time (10, 35, and ...

Enrichment of fuel properties of biomass using non-oxidative torrefaction for gasification

Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2023
The abundance and replenishment nature of solid biomass prompt fuel substitution for gasification and thermal power plants. However, many challenges are encountered while utilizing raw biomass, such as seasonality, strong hydrophilicity, low bulk and energy density, excess oxygen content, less compositional homogeneity, and poor grindability.

Impacts of non-oxidative torrefaction conditions on the fuel properties of indigenous biomass (bagasse)

Waste Management & Research: The Journal for a Sustainable Circular Economy, 2020
Biomass is considered as the largest renewable energy source in the world. However, some of its inherent properties such as hygroscopicity, lower energy content, low mass density and bio-degradation on storage hinder its extensive application in energy generation processes.
