Cellulose Nanofibers Prepared by TEMPO-Mediated Oxidation of Native Cellulose
Biomacromolecules, 2007Never-dried and once-dried hardwood celluloses were oxidized by a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-mediated system, and highly crystalline and individualized cellulose nanofibers, dispersed in water, were prepared by mechanical treatment of the oxidized cellulose/water slurries.

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2012Composites of poly(lactic) acid (PLA) reinforced with TEMPO-oxidized fibrillated cellulose (TOFC) were prepared to 15, 20, 25, and 30% fiber weight fractions. To aid dispersion and to improve stress transfer, we acetylated the TOFC prior to the fabrication of TOFC-PLA composite films.

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1945Dry gauze used to stanch bleeding in the open wound has, in the experience of most surgeons, been both life saving and hazardous. Hemorrhage has been checked which might otherwise have proved fatal, but the subsequent removal of the gauze which stuck to the raw surfaces often resulted in fresh bleeding, and the danger of infection was great.

Modification of carboxymethyl cellulose through oxidation
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2012The periodate oxidation reaction of carboxymethyl cellulose involve the primary and secondary hydroxyl groups of the pyranose ring. The reaction is accompanied by the opening of the pyranose ring and resulting product is dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose along with some hydrated forms.

1995The first spectra of a number of oxidized celluloses were obtained by Rowen, Hunt, and Plyler [164]. They used films of regenerated cellulose, oxidized by nitrogen dioxide or periodic acid. These authors erroneously attributed bands at 1640 and 1280 cm−1, in the spectrum of cellulose oxidized by nitrogen dioxide, to the carboxyl group.
