Thermal De-Oxygenation to Form Condensable Aerosol From Reconstituted Tobacco without Auto-Ignition

open access: yesContributions to Tobacco and Nicotine Research, 2022
A novel concept is described here that utilizes externally applied heat to a solid rod of reconstituted tobacco biomass to form a stream of aerosol under progressively oxygen-deficient atmosphere.

Is the Hyporheic Zone Relevant beyond the Scientific Community? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Rivers are important ecosystems under continuous anthropogenic stresses. The hyporheic zone is a ubiquitous, reactive interface between the main channel and its surrounding sediments along the river network. We elaborate on the main physical, biological,

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Ising-like Spin Anisotropy and Competing Antiferromagnetic - Ferromagnetic Orders in GdBaCo_{2}O_{5.5} Single Crystals

open access: yes, 2003
In RBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} compounds (R is rare earth), a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition is accompanied by a giant magnetoresistance. We study the magnetization of detwinned GdBaCo_{2}O_{5.5} single crystals, and find a remarkable uniaxial ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Effect of Boron-Zinc-Aluminum-Silicium Compounds on the Fire Performance of Ultra-Low Density Fiberboards (ULDFs)

open access: yesBioResources, 2016
B-Zn-Si-Al compounds, as a modification of Si-Al compounds, is made of sodium silicate, zinc sulfate, borax and aluminum sulfate, acting as a fire retardant during the preparation of ultra-low density fiberboards (ULDFs).

An Investigation of Structure-Activity Relationships of Azolylacryloyl Derivatives Yielded Potent and Long-Acting Hemoglobin Modulators for Reversing Erythrocyte Sickling

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2020
Aromatic aldehydes that bind to sickle hemoglobin (HbS) to increase the protein oxygen affinity and/or directly inhibit HbS polymer formation to prevent the pathological hypoxia-induced HbS polymerization and the subsequent erythrocyte sickling have for ...

Temperature dependence of singlet oxygen generation by different photosensitizers [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2019
The temperature dependences of the lifetimes and the efficiency of singlet oxygen generation for a set of compounds (porphyrins, metalloporphyrins, porphycene, terrylene etc.) has been measured and characterized. Based on the character of the temperature

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...
