Enhanced oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction by zinc doping in cobalt–nickel sulfide heteronanorods

open access: yesElectrochemical Science Advances, 2021
Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to enable electrical‐to‐hydrogen energy conversion technologies to reality.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

The Effect of Removal of External Proteins PsbO, PsbP and PsbQ on Flash-Induced Molecular Oxygen Evolution and Its Biphasicity in Tobacco PSII

open access: yesCurrent Issues in Molecular Biology
The oxygen evolution within photosystem II (PSII) is one of the most enigmatic processes occurring in nature. It is suggested that external proteins surrounding the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) not only stabilize it and provide an appropriate ionic ...

Nitrogen Production in Starburst Galaxies Detected by GALEX [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We investigate the production of nitrogen in star-forming galaxies with ultraviolet (UV) radiation detected by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer Satellite (GALEX).

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Fatty acid content during reconstitution of the photosynthetic apparatus in the air-dried leaves of Xerophyta scabrida after rehydration

open access: yesBiologia Plantarum, 2011
Desiccation of Xerophyta scabrida caused considerable damage of chloroplast ultrastructure together with a complete loss of chlorophyll. Upon rehydration, the relative water content of the pale-green leaves almost reached that of the dark-green ones ...

Catalysts on Demand: Selective Oxidations by Laboratory-Evolved Cytochrome P450 BM3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Efficient catalysts for selective oxidation of C-H bonds using atmospheric oxygen are highly desirable to decrease the economic and environmental costs associated with conventional oxidation processes.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Discovery of an ultramassive pulsating white dwarf [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We announce the discovery of the most massive pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere (DA) white dwarf (WD) ever discovered, GD 518. Model atmosphere fits to the optical spectrum of this star show it is a 12,030 +/- 210 K WD with a log(g) = 9.08 +/- 0.06, which ...
