Tracheal Insufflation of Oxygen at Low Flow

Anesthesia & Analgesia, 1990
Tracheal insufflation of oxygen (TRIO) may provide temporary oxygenation for patients or sustain life in apneic mass casualties when conventional ventilatory techniques are not available or feasible. Logistically, minimum flows of TRIO (Vmin) are desirable for field use and to reduce barotrauma should airway obstruction occur.

Constant Oxygen Insufflation (COI) in a Ventilatory Failure Model

American Review of Respiratory Disease, 1988
Abstract We examined the use of a constant insufflation of oxygen into the lungs to assist ventilation in a ventilatory failure model. The model consisted of 12 anesthetized dogs (17 to 32 kg) that were partially paralyzed using intermittent low doses of muscle relaxant; this produced a steady-state mean PaCO2 of 90 ± 15.8 mm Hg (± SD)

Prevention of suction-induced hypoxemia by simultaneous oxygen insufflation

Critical Care Medicine, 1987
The effects of endotracheal suctioning were studied in 38 patients. A significant decline in arterial oxygen tension and saturation was noted in all patients. A new double lumen suction catheter that simultaneously insufflates oxygen while suctioning was tested in these same patients and was found to prevent hypoxemia in all patients. We recommend that

Aspiration in Transtracheal Oxygen Insufflation with Different Insufflation Flow Rates During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in Dogs

Anesthesia & Analgesia, 2000
We investigated whether transtracheal insufflation of oxygen with different insufflation flow rates protects against aspiration of gastric contents during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Its ventilation and oxygenation effects were also evaluated. Cardiac arrest was induced in anesthetized and paralyzed 18 mongrel dogs.

Some uses for presacral oxygen insufflation

Journal of the Faculty of Radiologists, 1959
THE radiographic demonstration of the l~idney area by means of air in the perirenal tissues introduced by the presacral route was first described by Rivas (195o), the point of entry of the needle being at the level of the sacrococcygeal joint 1-2 cm. beyond the inferior border of the sacrum.

Oxygenation in medetomidine-sedated dogs with and without 100% oxygen insufflation.

Veterinary therapeutics : research in applied veterinary medicine, 2007
Oxygenation status was evaluated in medetomidine-sedated dogs breathing room air (M) or 100 percent oxygen (MO2). Medetomidine (40 microg/kg IV) administration resulted in peripheral vasoconstriction and decreased venous saturation as measured by an increased oxygen extraction ratio in peripheral tissues.
