Oxygen saturation and cognitive performance
Psychopharmacology, 2002The purpose of the experiments was to investigate how inhalation of 100% oxygen affected cognitive performance. A test battery was developed that was designed to capture different aspects of cognitive processes, i.e., perception, attention, working memory, long-term memory and prospective memory.

Misconceptions in Reporting Oxygen Saturation
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 2007We describe some misconceptions that have become common practice in reporting blood gas and cooximetry results. In 1980, oxygen saturation was incorrectly redefined in a report of a new instrument for analysis of hemoglobin (Hb) derivatives. Oxygen saturation (sO2) was redefined as the ratio of oxyhemoglobin (O2Hb) to total Hb instead of the ratio of ...

This chapter describes how desaturation during a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is uncommon. A fall of more than 4% from resting values is considered abnormal. Oxygen desaturation is usually caused by lung or pulmonary vascular disease, reflecting ventilation–perfusion inequality or impaired diffusion.

Nomenclature of Oxygen Saturation
1994This paper addresses a controversial question relating to the definition of oxygen saturation as O2 content/O2 capacity: Whether, O2 capacity should include a) only oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, designated herein as O2Hb + HHb, or b) total hemoglobin, tHb = O2Hb + HHb + COHb + MetHb.

[The physiopathology of oxygen venous saturation].
Minerva anestesiologica, 1992The paper underlines the importance of continuous SvO2 monitoring by means of the insertion of a modified Swan-Ganz optic fibre catheter into the pulmonary artery. Following an analysis of the factors which regulate O2 transport and ATP formation, together with metabolism self-regulating mechanisms which intervene in periods of stress to guarantee ...

Oxygen Saturation in Children in the Postoperative Period
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 1992Some adult patients have periods of significant oxygen desaturation after surgery but, other than for immediately after surgery in the recovery room, few data are available in children. We monitored overnight paired preoperative and postoperative oxygen saturations in 19 children, and overnight postoperative saturations in 50 additional children to ...

The fraction of incident light which is returned from a turbid sample contains information about the pigments within the sample. Analysis of the spectra of this returned light allows detailed information of the relative quantity of these pigments to be determined.

Oxygen Saturation and Retinopathy of Prematurity
Clinics in Perinatology, 2019Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a serious disease affecting premature infants. Rates of ROP increase with decreasing gestational age. Duration of oxygen exposure is correlated with ROP. Many studies evaluating oxygen have been performed to assess impact on ROP. This article describes recent findings for oxygen saturation target studies and suggests

Thenar Muscle Oxygen Saturation Levels: A Surrogate for Central Venous Oxygen Saturation?
Clinical Pediatrics, 2019Purpose. Shock is associated with increased tissue oxygen extraction. Near-infrared spectroscopy–derived thenar muscle tissue oxygenation (StO2) levels can provide an estimate of the oxygen supply-demand balance at the tissue level. We hypothesized that thenar StO2 levels would correlate with central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) levels, the gold ...
