Cassini UVIS observations of Europa's oxygen atmosphere and torus

Icarus, 2005
Abstract Observations of the Europa environment using the Cassini UltraViolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) show the presence of an extended atomic oxygen atmosphere in addition to the bound molecular oxygen atmosphere first detected by Hubble Space Telescope in 1994 [D.T. Transient Change of Io's Neutral Oxygen Cloud and Plasma Torus Observed by Hisaki

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2019
AbstractIo's atmospheric oxygen atoms are heated by atmospheric sputtering and escape from Io's gravity, forming a neutral oxygen cloud around Io's orbit. This neutral cloud is important as a source of the Io oxygen plasma torus. Previous studies derived the distribution and density of the equilibrium neutral oxygen cloud.

Radial variation of sulfur and oxygen ions in the Io plasma torus as deduced from remote observations by Hisaki

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2017
AbstractThe Io plasma torus, situated in the Jovian inner magnetosphere (6–8 Jovian radii from the planet) is filled with heavy ions and electrons, a large part of which are derived from Io's volcanos. The torus is the key area connecting the primary source of plasma (Io) with the midmagnetosphere (>10 Jovian radii), where highly dynamic phenomena ...

Insight Into Io Enabled by Characterization of Its Neutral Oxygen Torus

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2022
AbstractThe Jovian system is very intriguing with extremely different particle sources. As the dominant source of particles to Jupiter's magnetosphere, Io is of particular importance. The JAXA Hisaki (SPRINT‐A) mission is providing insightful observations with regard to Io.

Origin and maintenance of the oxygen torus in Saturn's magnetosphere

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1993
Observations of thermal ions in Saturn's inner magnetosphere suggest distributed local sources rather than diffusive mass loading from a source located further out. We suggest that the plasma is produced and maintained mainly by “self‐sputtering” of E ring dust.

Flux Enhancements of Field‐Aligned Low‐Energy O+ Ion (FALEO) in the Inner Magnetosphere: A Possible Source of Warm Plasma Cloak and Oxygen Torus

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2022
AbstractFlux enhancements of field‐aligned low‐energy O+ ion (FALEO) are simultaneously observed by Arase, Van Allen Probes A and B in the nightside inner magnetosphere during 05–07 UT on September 22, 2018. FALEOs appear after a magnetic dipolarization signature with approximately 6–20 min delay.

The velocity distribution functions of oxygen and sulphur ions in the Io plasma torus

Advances in Space Research, 1993
Abstract The Smith-Strobel model for the energy transfer and ion velocity distributions of the Io torus plasma is updated to take into account the heating effect of the secondary hot electrons and hot ions. The new radiative cooling rates — which led to the current energy crisis in the maintenance of the ultraviolet emission of the Io plasma torus ...

Ratio of oxygen to sulfur in the Io plasma torus

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1987
Model calculations of collisional diffusive equilibrium in the Io plasma torus using the most recent estimates of reaction rates and electron excitation collision strengths indicate that oxygen and sulfur ions are partitioned roughly equally as major species, in conformity with Voyager EUV measurements of O II, S II, and S III emissions, and with ...

Normal-mode Magnetoseismology as a Virtual Plasma Mass Density Instrument and Its Use in Investigation of Oxygen Torus during Magnetic Storms

2020
<p>Previous studies have demonstrated that the field line resonance (FLR) frequencies detected on closed magnetospheric field lines can be used to estimate the plasma mass density in the inner magnetosphere. This method, also known as “normal-mode magnetoseismology,” can act as a virtual instrument ...
