First record of bacterial communities within defecated contents and gut of post‐defecated females of Culicoides peregrinus Kieffer and Culicoides oxystoma Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), vectors of bluetongue virus

open access: closedMedical and Veterinary Entomology
Defecation is one of the posterior‐station transmission routes for pathogens in haematophagous insects. Culicoides peregrinus Kieffer and Culicoides oxystoma Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are the proven vectors of many arboviruses, most importantly ...

Isolation and preliminary characterization of an orbivirus of the Palyam serogroup from biting midge Culicoides oxystoma in Japan.

open access: closedVeterinary Microbiology, 1989
An orbivirus of the Palyam serogroup was isolated from Culicoides oxystoma collected in a cowshed in Kagoshima, Southern Kyushu Island, Japan. This is the first isolation of an orbivirus of the Palyam serogroup in Japan. The virus was a spherical non-enveloped RNA virus, approximately 60 nm in diameter.
