Oxytocics in developing countries

A prospective multicenter study of obstetric practices was conducted in three developing countries (Benin, Congo and Senegal) to analyze oxytocic use during labor. One of the objectives was to assess the possible negative effects of the treatment regimens instituted during the labor monitoring phase.Four health districts participated in the study.

The most widely known oxytocic drug that can be used for the induction of labor or post-partum is oxytocin. In 1954, the american biochemist Vincent du Vigneaud was the first to describe an octapeptide amide with the hormonal activity of oxytocin. One year later, he was able to synthesize this octapeptide amide.

Abstract It is estimated that postpartum hemorrhage affects 10% of deliveries. Oxytocic drugs are used to increase uterine tone and for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage and its treatment. They are divided into three groups: oxytocin, prostaglandins, and methylergonovine.
