The Ozone Hole

We present an overview of the processes leading to the ozone hole in the lower stratosphere with an emphasis on the role of transport and mixing. It is shown that the polar vortex behaves as a chemical container owing to the existence of a barrier to transport along its edge, only broken by sparse filamentary structures.

The Antarctic Ozone Hole

The ozone hole over Antarctica reflects the as yet largest observed perturbation of the stratospheric ozone layer. During this event the ozone layer in an altitude range 14–22 km is significantly depleted with local losses up to 90% and changes in the total ozone column of up to 60%.

In this article, we will consider the atmosphere, and what ozone and the ozone layer actually are. We explore the chemistry responsible for the ozone destruction, and learn about why conditions favour ozone destruction over Antarctica.
