Cotton Farming Pesticides Affect Ileal Microbiota Activity and Expression of Virulome but Not Resistome or Metabolic Pathways in a Sedentary Wild Passerine

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The increased use of agrochemicals to enhance crop production has had detrimental environmental effects including implication in the sharp decline of North American farmland‐breeding birds. Here, using a combination of deep shotgun metatranscriptomics and pesticide exposure data, we sought to assess whether exposure to cotton (Gossypium spp ...

In situ mapping of iron oxidation in laminar metal fuel flames using X‐ray absorption spectroscopy

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
For the first time an iron metal flame has been mapped by in situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. Strong gradients in oxidation state and phase composition across the metallic core and the flame front were found with FeO peaking at the visible flame front and Fe3O4 forming further beyond.Metal fuels such as iron are promising carbon‐free energy carriers

Prenatal exposure to organochlorine compounds and lung function during childhood

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2019
Introduction: Prenatal exposure to organochlorine compounds (OCs) can increase the risk of reported respiratory symptoms in children. It remains unclear whether these compounds can also impact on lung function.

Fine‐tuning ab initio XANES spectra calculations using the Bayesian optimization algorithm

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
A Bayesian optimization technique is used to tune the FEFF and FDMNES packages and to improve matching between theoretical and experimental spectra. The tests were performed on monometallic Ni, Fe and Pd K‐edge XANES spectra using several different spectrum similarity metrics.Theoretical modeling of X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure (XANES) spectra ...

Immune cell counts and risks of respiratory infections among infants exposed pre- and postnatally to organochlorine compounds: a prospective study

open access: yesEnvironmental Health, 2008
Background Early-life chemical exposure may influence immune system development, subsequently affecting child health. We investigated immunomodulatory potentials of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and p,p'-DDE in infants.

Determinants of p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDE) concentration in adipose tissue in women from five European cities

open access: yes, 1999
To identify the determinants of p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (p,p'-DDE) in adipose tissue in subjects who participated in a cross- sectional study, we analyzed fatty acids, antioxidants, and p,p'-DDE in aspirates of adipose tissue of 328 ...
