Combining surface and soil environmental DNA with artificial cover objects to improve terrestrial reptile survey detection

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 6, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Reptiles are increasingly of conservation concern due to their susceptibility to habitat loss, emerging disease, and harvest in the wildlife trade. However, reptile populations are often difficult to monitor given the frequency of crypsis in their life history.

Percutaneous fetoscopic spina bifida repair: effect on ambulation and need for postnatal cerebrospinal fluid diversion and bladder catheterization

open access: yesUltrasound in Obstetrics &Gynecology, Volume 58, Issue 4, Page 582-589, October 2021., 2021
Abstract Objective A trial comparing prenatal with postnatal open spina bifida (OSB) repair established that prenatal surgery was associated with better postnatal outcome. However, in the trial, fetal surgery was carried out through hysterotomy. Minimally invasive approaches are being developed to mitigate the risks of open maternal–fetal surgery.

Digital data sources and methods for conservation culturomics

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 2, Page 398-411, April 2021., 2021
Abstract Ongoing loss of biological diversity is primarily the result of unsustainable human behavior. Thus, the long‐term success of biodiversity conservation depends on a thorough understanding of human–nature interactions. Such interactions are ubiquitous but vary greatly in time and space and are difficult to monitor efficiently at large spatial ...

Responses of New Zealand forest birds to management of introduced mammals

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 1, Page 35-49, February 2021., 2021
Abstract Over the past 1000 years New Zealand has lost 40–50% of its bird species, and over half of these extinctions are attributable to predation by introduced mammals. Populations of many extant forest bird species continue to be depredated by mammals, especially rats, possums, and mustelids.

Minimally invasive techniques for transthoracic oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer: systematic review and network meta‐analysis

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 787-803, October 2020., 2020
Minimally invasive and robotic techniques for oesophagectomy are associated with reduced perioperative morbidity and length of hospital stay, with no compromise of oncological outcomes but no improvement in perioperative mortality. There are suggestions of improved long‐term survival with minimally invasive oesophagectomy and robotic minimally invasive

Prediction of surgical difficulty in minimally invasive surgery for rectal cancer by use of MRI pelvimetry

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 4, Page 666-677, August 2020., 2020
This study highlights the impact of MRI pelvimetry in predicting surgical difficulty in laparoscopic rectal surgery. Multivariable analysis identified that surgical difficulty was significantly associated with four variables: BMI, tumour size, anorectal angle and pelvic outlet.
