Departing from standard practices: Strategic application of value engineering in the anatomy laboratory to enhance formaldehyde extraction using high‐impact, low‐cost, and low‐maintenance solutions

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, Volume 18, Issue 3, Page 241-253, March 2025.
Abstract This study describes the process of developing a high‐impact, low‐cost, and low‐maintenance air ventilation system for anatomy facilities. It employed the strategic application of Value Engineering (VE), assuring that the air ventilation system meets contemporary threshold limit values (TLVs) for formaldehyde in the working zone of dissection ...

Prebiotic, Probiotic, and Synbiotic Supplementation in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Gut dysbiosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Restoring gut microbiota with prebiotic, probiotic, and synbiotic supplementation has emerged as a potential therapeutic intervention but has not been systematically ...

Pss knockdown in the midgut causes growth retardation in Drosophila similar to that in human LMHD

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Phosphatidylserine synthase (PSS), localized in the mitochondrial membrane, synthesizes phosphatidylserine. In humans, mutations in Pss lead to Lenz–Majewski hyperostotic dwarfism, a disorder affecting growth and development. The effects of Pss mutations on the growth of Drosophila melanogaster are not fully known. Hence, this study

Supplementing Yogurt with Probiotic Bifidobacteria to Counter Chronic Kidney Disease

open access: yesFermentation, 2023
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately affects populations in developing countries. In sub-Saharan Africa, CKD prevalence is high (12–23%) and is associated with cardiovascular manifestations.

Heterogeneous Reaction of Gaseous Ozone with Aqueous Iodide in the Presence of Aqueous Organic Species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The fast reaction of gaseous ozone, O_3(g), with aqueous iodide, I−(aq), was found to be affected by environmentally relevant cosolutes in experiments using cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS) for ...

Capillary Zone Electrophoresis for the Analysis of Phenolic Preservatives in Plasma and Insulin Formulations Using Salting‐Out Assisted Liquid–Liquid Extraction

open access: yesELECTROPHORESIS, EarlyView.
A rapid and reliable SALLE–CZE–UV method was developed for the determination of phenolic preservatives in insulin formulations and human plasma. The approach provides efficient extraction, fast separation (< 6 min), and excellent sensitivity, precision, and recovery, meeting regulatory requirements for accurate quantification.

Radical-Scavenging Activity and Cytotoxicity of p-Methoxyphenol and p-Cresol Dimers

open access: yesMolecules, 2010
Compoundswith two phenolic OH groups like curcumin possess efficient antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. We synthesized p-cresol dimer (2,2'-dihydroxy-5,5'-dimethylbiphenol, 2a) and p-methoxyphenol dimer (2,2'-dihydroxy-5,5'-dimethoxybiphenol, 2b)

Berberine ameliorates chronic kidney disease through inhibiting the production of gut-derived uremic toxins in the gut microbiota

open access: yesActa Pharmaceutica Sinica B, 2023
At present, clinical interventions for chronic kidney disease are very limited, and most patients rely on dialysis to sustain their lives for a long time.

GC × GC‐TOF MS and Sensory Profiling of Aroma Compounds in Magnolia Species: Effects of Processing Methods on Volatile Retention in M. wufengensis

open access: yesFlavour and Fragrance Journal, EarlyView.
The first comparative analysis of Magnolia scents reveals that M. wufengensis is characterised by a high aldehyde content, exhibiting a fresh, sweet, and fruity fragrance profile. Furthermore, freeze‐drying preserves 6.7 times more 2‐nonenal compared to shade‐drying, highlighting its superior efficacy in retaining key volatile compounds.

p-Cresol induces disruption of cardiomyocyte adherens junctions

open access: yesToxicology, 2013
Higher serum levels of p-cresol in chronic kidney disease populations have been associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. However, studies on how p-cresol affects intercellular junctions between cardiomyocytes were limited. This study investigated the effect of p-cresol on adherens junction (AJ) of neonatal cultured cardiomyocytes and its ...
