Distribution and Variation between Populations of Pacific Sand Lance in the San Juan Archipelago [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In the San Juan Islands, the immediate trophic levels of the marine food web represent a critical link that is largely constituted by forage fish, including the Pacific Sand Lance.

Prospects of multipurpose biomonitoring for fisheries assessment based on environmental nucleic acids

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 109, Issue 2, Page 693-714, August 2026.
Abstract Methods using environmental nucleic acids have become highly effective for monitoring aquatic biodiversity, with an array of suitable use cases, including metrics for fisheries assessment. Traditional methods for assessing fish populations often rely on invasive techniques with limited spatial and temporal coverage.

Microplastic prevalence at Pacific sand lance (Ammodytes personatus) spawning beaches on eastern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

open access: yes, 2020
PosterThe objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of microplastics in selected sand lance “spawning” beaches (locations where sand lance eggs were observed), “non-spawning” beaches (locations where sand lance eggs were sampled but were ...

7000 Years of Aboriginal Mining at Sugarloaf Hill in the Riverland Region of South Australia

open access: yesArchaeology in Oceania, Volume 61, Issue 2, Page 277-311, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Silcrete and chert are commonly represented in Aboriginal archaeological lithic assemblages across large parts of the southwestern Murray‐Darling Basin (MDB). In South Australia (SA), these materials were sourced from a series of quarries located along the incised course of the Murray River through the upper Riverland region.

Abundance and Distribution of Pacific Sand Lance in San Juan Channel, WA

open access: yes, 2016
This study is part of an ongoing effort on behalf of the Pelagic Ecosystem and Function (PEF) Apprenticeship to collect information and monitor changes in Pacific sand lance, an important forage fish in the San Juan Channel.

Contemporary disasters may not kill more women than men: an empirical inquiry into sex‐differentiated fatalities in the twenty‐first century

open access: yesDisasters, Volume 50, Issue 3, July 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the claim that women are disproportionately more likely to die in disasters by reviewing existing data sources and compiling new datasets on sex‐differentiated disaster fatalities in the twenty‐first century. The analysis is structured by disaster type, covering geophysical, meteorological, climatological, hydrological,

Habitat preference of the Pacific Sand Lance (Ammodytes hexapterus) in the San Juan Channel in the fall: 2014 season and interannual comparison 2012-2014 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Previous studies have found that the Pacific Sand Lance prefer to bury into sediment that is mainly composed of coarse sand and low gravel. This study explored whether that was the case for sand lance buried in the sand wave field in the San Juan Channel

Using the Diet Composition of Adult Chinook Salmon to Understand the Regional Structure of Salish Sea Forage Communities

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 35, Issue 4, Page 565-579, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Small pelagic fish and other forage species are patchily distributed over space and time, resulting in variable foraging conditions experienced by their predators. The high‐resolution data necessary to understand the spatiotemporal structure of forage communities are challenging to collect with expensive fishery‐independent surveys, meaning ...

The Effect of Cryoprotectants on the Properties of Pacific Sand Lance Ammodytes personatus Girard Surimi During Frozen Storage

open access: yesFisheries and aquatic sciences, 2014
Abstract We investigate the effects of cryoprotectant mixtures on the quality of sand lance surimi (SLS) during storage at -30 o C. We moni-tored freeze-induced denaturation of myofibrillar protein in SLS and examined the texture profile of SLS gel. Freeze-induced dena-turation was assessed by evaluating SLS Ca +2 -ATPase activity.

Seasonal and interannual variation in the abundance and demographics of the Pacific Sand Lance (Ammodytes personatus) in the San Juan Channel

open access: yes, 2016
The Pacific Sand Lance Ammodytes personatus is a small, semi-demersal forage fish that plays a crucial role in the pelagic ecosystem of the Salish Sea.
