The Microbial Functional Communities of Mollisol and Saline–Sodic Paddy Soils at Rice Heading and Harvest Stages in Northeast China

open access: yesAgriculture
Rice is a primary food source for nearly half of the global population. In Northeast China, paddy soils are mainly classified into two distinct types: fertile mollisol and nutrient-deficient saline–sodic soil.

Plant biostimulants and their potential role in achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Plant biostimulants are substances that are obtained from a variety of sources and are applied in minute quantities to enhance plant growth and vigor. In this review we detail how the use of plant biostimulants may contribute to efforts to achieving a number of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Past, present and future of local crop evolution

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Promoting agrobiodiversity is a promising strategy for mitigating the negative effects of climate change on global food security. We highlight the central role evolutionary processes play in harnessing the potential of local crops by integrating genomics, archaeology, ethnobotany and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).

Changes in Soil Organic Carbon and Enzyme Activity After Land Use Change in Northeast China

open access: yesAgronomy
In Northeast China, the establishment of irrigated paddy fields manifests on soil characterized as upland soils. However, the implications of soil conversion from upland soil to paddy soil for soil aggregates, soil organic carbon (SOC), and enzyme ...

Integrating habitat suitability, socioeconomics, and infrastructure to assess global biological invasion risk under climate change: A case study of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
We developed an invasion risk index framework that integrates socioeconomic and environmental data using an entropy‐weighting method. The case study highlights the need for region‐specific biosecurity measures for Chilo suppressalis. Abstract BACKGROUND Biological invasion risk is a multifaceted concept that, according to the Food and Agriculture ...

Lipid biogeochemistry of paddy soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016

Field performance of MON 94637 and laboratory evidence supporting a Bt pyramiding strategy against key lepidopteran pests in Brazil

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
A genetically modified soybean expressing multiple Cry proteins protects against key lepidopteran pests, consistently reducing larval damage and offering an effective resistance management option for soybean production in Brazil. Abstract BACKGROUND Pyramided Bt genes in crops have been widely adopted to delay insect resistance evolution worldwide. The

Pro‐197 mutations confer resistance to thiencarbazone but not to foramsulfuron in ALS‐resistant Poa annua populations

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Foramsulfuron remains effective on Pro‐197 Poa annua, but co‐formulation with thiencarbazone reduces efficacy due to limited activity and antagonism. Therefore, foramsulfuron + thiencarbazone should be used in fields without ALS‐resistant weeds to ensure effective in‐crop control.

The Transition from Conventional to Organic Rice Fields Affects Soil Chemical Properties, Growth and Yield of Rice var. Mentik Wangi Susu [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences
The high use of synthetic fertilizer and pesticides in paddy field practice was not sustainable and resulted in decreased production. Therefore, organic farming is one of the solutions.
