Extramammary Paget's disease is an in situ skin and mucosal carcinoma frequently associated with and probably arising in a subjacent or regionally proximate carcinoma. Microscopic spread of tumor cells almost always extends beyond clinically apparent disease.

The cytoplasmic sialomucin in Paget cells of extramammary Paget's disease was examined by means of a battery of histochemical techniques. The staining methods used involved an electrolyte--Alcian Blue (pH 5.8), periodic acid--Schiff and azure A at selected pH levels.

SUMMARYTwo cases of mammary and one case of vulval Paget's disease are studied histologically and electronmicroscopically. There are no substantial morphological differences between those two types.The Paget cell has a characteristic fine structure: it lacks tonofibrils and shows many of the features of apocrine cells.
