Intractable pain with lung cancer
Pain, 1987This study examines retrospectively the natural history, classification, clinical and pathological features and results of treatment of intractable pain associated with lung cancer in 221 patients. The 3 chief causes of malignancy-related pain were skeletal metastatic disease (34%), Pancoast's tumour (31%) and chest wall disease (21%), together ...

Ventilatory response to intractable pain
Pain, 1981Fifty-two patients, admitted to a pain relief unit, had a cannula placed in the radial artery to measure the paO2, paCO2 and pH of arterial blood every 2 h, for periods ranging from 12 to 24 h. The patients were divided into 3 groups: 14 had low back pain, 21 patients had pain from cancer, and 17 had pain from other causes. Twenty were male and 32 were

Microglia and intractable chronic pain
Glia, 2012AbstractMany pathological processes within the central nervous system are mediated by complex interactions between neurons and resident glial cells. In the case of painful peripheral neuropathy, spinal microglia react and undergo a series of changes that directly influence the establishment of neuropathic pain states.

Thalamotomy for Alleviation of Intractable Pain
Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, 197417 patients had thalamotomies for alleviation of pain due to malignancy since January, 1970. In 12 of them, thalamic electrodes were implanted through occipital burr holes for subsequent radiofrequency thalamotomies. In 4 cases, the lesions were made by the bifrontal approach and 1 case was approached from the left occipital and right frontal.

Neurosurgical treatments of intractable pain
Metabolism, 2010Intractable pain may require neurosurgical intervention. This review provides a critical update of neurosurgical techniques available to treat this condition. Neurosurgery can affect pain's pathways from the receptor up to the "centers" of its reception and perception, either by destroying or by stimulating them.

Anterior commissurotomy for intractable pain
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1977✓ Anterior commissurotomy for the relief of intractable lower half and midline pain has been found to be a very satisfactory procedure in a small group of severely incapacitated patients. The presumed anatomic rationale for undertaking the procedure has not been confirmed by postoperative sensory examinations.

CelIuIar Transplantation for Intractable Pain
1997Publisher Summary Cellular transplantation may be a powerful approach for the alleviation of chronic pain. To study this, adrenal medullary chromaffin have been chosen as donor sources, because these cells produce and secrete catecholamines and opioid peptides, agents that reduce pain when administered directly into the spinal subarachnoid space and ...
