Nanophotonics for pair production [PDF]
The transformation of electromagnetic energy into matter represents a fascinating prediction of relativistic quantum electrodynamics that is paradigmatically exemplified by the creation of electron-positron pairs out of light.

PAPRICA: The Pair Production Imaging Chamber—Proof of Principle
In Particle Therapy, safety margins are applied around the tumor to account for the beam range uncertainties and ensure an adequate dose coverage of the tumor volume during the therapy.

Bulk Density Response and Experimental Study of Pulsed Neutron-Gamma Density Logging
The pulsed neutron-gamma density logging technique is used to measure the bulk density of formations based on the detection of gamma rays from the inelastic scattering of neutrons in the formations.

Lorentz Violation by the Preferred Frame Effects and Cosmic and Gamma Ray Propagation
The ‘relativity with a preferred frame’, designed to reconcile the relativity principle with the existence of the cosmological preferred frame, incorporates the preferred frame at the level of special relativity (SR) while retaining the fundamental ...

Recent high-intensity laser experiments (Cole et al 2018 Phys. Rev. X 8 011020; Poder et al 2018 Phys. Rev. X 8 031004) have shown evidence of strong radiation reaction in the quantum regime. Experimental evidence of quantum effects on radiation reaction

Laser-driven muon production for material inspection and imaging
We numerically show that laser-wakefield accelerated electron beams obtained using a PetaWatt-scale laser system can produce high-flux sources of relativistic muons that are suitable for radiographic applications.

A laser–plasma platform for photon–photon physics: the two photon Breit–Wheeler process
We describe a laser–plasma platform for photon–photon collision experiments to measure fundamental quantum electrodynamic processes. As an example we describe using this platform to attempt to observe the linear Breit–Wheeler process.

Photon–Photon Interactions and the Opacity of the Universe in Gamma Rays
We discuss the topic of the transparency of the Universe in gamma rays due to extragalactic background light, and its cosmological and physical implications.

Pair Production and Optical Lasers [PDF]
Electron-positron pair creation in a standing wave is explored using a parameter-free quantum kinetic equation. Field strengths and frequencies corresponding to modern optical lasers induce a material polarisation of the QED vacuum, which may be characterised as a plasma of e^+ e^- quasiparticle pairs with a density of ~10^{20}cm^{-3}.
