A paired comparison of pair comparisons
Journal of Mathematical Psychology, 1965Abstract The theory of choice developed by Luce and the paired comparison theory due to Thurstone are restated so as to permit direct comparison. It is shown that the theories differ in general, but coincide for certain sets of stimuli. The class of stimuli on which they coincide is described, and it is proved that they can coincide on no stimuli ...

To pair or not to pair: chromosome pairing and evolution
Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 1998Chromosome pairing in wild-type wheat closely resembles the process in both yeast and Drosophila. The recent characterisation of a mutant Ph1 wheat and the observation that chromosome pairing in the absence of Ph1 more closely resembles that of mammals and maize has shed light on the evolution of chromosome pairing in the cereals.

Pair clustering and giant pairing resonances
Physical Review C, 1985Giant pairing resonances, i.e., collective two-particle excitations built upon high-lying single-particle states, are studied in the lead region. Two-particle 0/sup +/ states (T = 1) outside the /sup 208/Pb core are found to be clustered in the nuclear surface.

Abstract A stochastic model for the formation of parasite pairs in the definite host is considered. An explicit expression for the expected number of pairs is derived and compared with alternative models.

Pairs of promoter pairs in a web of transcription [PDF]
A new analysis has characterized a fundamental building block of complex transcribed loci. Constellations of core promoters can generally be reduced to pairs of divergent transcription units, where the distance between the pairs of transcription units correlates with constraints on genomic context, which in turn contribute to transcript fate.

Wiener, in 1914, reduced the theory of relations to that of classes by construing relations as classes of ordered pairs and defining the ordered pair in turn on the basis of class theory alone.1 The definition, as improved by Kuratowski,2 identifies the ordered pair x;y with uxyi(ix U iy).In terms of Russell's theory of types, x;y in the above sense is
