The aim of this technical note is to present a minimally invasive approach to the maxilla for segmental Le Fort I osteotomy in surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE). This approach reduces the nasolabial changes that occur with the traditional circumvestibular approach.

Intraoperative Expansion of the Palate by the Tumescent Technique
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 1997Intraoperative rapid expansion of soft tissue of the palate is reported. Tissue is recruited by repeated injections of an isotonic solution in a tumescent-like technique, thus producing increasing swelling of the palatal soft tissue. Straight direct closure of palatal clefts and fistulas is achieved with minimal scarring at the midline, no secondary ...

Rapid Expansion of the Palate With a New Surgical Technique
Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 2010After briefly reviewing the literature concerning palatal expansion, a new technique combining surgical and medical orthodontic treatment is described. The technique, which entails detaching the nasal septum, is particularly appropriate in oral-breathing patients. Sixty-one patients (aged 10-32 years) were included in the study.

A Review of Tissue Expansion-Assisted Techniques of Cleft Palate Repair
Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 2016The purpose of this report was to examine current knowledge of use of tissue expansion techniques to assist cleft palate repair and to review and contrast various techniques reported. Two separate literature searches were conducted in the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Medline and Embase databases, from database inception until December 2014 for use of ...

Surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion: An outpatient technique with long-term stability
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1992This study presents the results of surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion done on an outpatient basis in 19 patients with a mean age of 30 years. Postsurgical and postorthodontic evaluation (mean, 2.4 years) showed a mean relapse rate of 8.8% in the canine region, 1% in the premolar region, and 7.7% in the molar region. These results show that the

In 1984, Glassman et al. described a conservative surgical method of separation of the midpalatal suture in which an osteotomy is done only at the lateral and anterior wall of the maxilla. Between 1991 and 1997, we have operated on 21 patients with maxillary transverse discrepancies using the method that they described.

Operative Techniques in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, 2012
Multiple palatopharyngoplasty techniques are available for reconstruction of the upper pharyngeal airway. To select appropriate procedures, the surgeon requires classification methods, but traditional staging systems only describe levels of obstruction and do not relate sufficient anatomical detail to specify an intervention.

Technique of Rapid Expansion in Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate
British Journal of Orthodontics, 1980A new device for rapid expansion of the maxillary arch in cleft palate patients, is described. Its main advantages are that it is designed to prevent uncontrolled relapse while the expansion screw is changed and while a retaining arch is fabricated. The buccal retaining arch leaves the alveolus and cleft accessible for surgery.
