Palate Reconstruction Technique
Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1962The integrity of the hard and soft palate is essential for the normal physiological functions of speaking, breathing, and eating. Deficiencies in this roof to the oral cavity may be the result of congenital clefts, infection, trauma, and extirpative operations for benign and malignant tumors.

ABSTRACT In all vertebrates, the secondary palate arises as bilateral outgrowths from the maxillary processes. In birds and most reptiles, these palatal shelves grow initially horizontally, but do not fuse with each other resulting in physiological cleft palate. In crocodilians, shelf fusion occurs resulting in an intact secondary palate.
