Understanding the cause-and-effect relationships for expected climate change is important to the community for three reasons: (1) to predict the character of the change; (2) to see if it can be prevented, or at least minimized, should it be perceived as threatening; and (3) to plan for the change if it cannot be avoided.

Paleoclimatology

Paleoclimatology is the study of the climate history of the Earth. This article summarizes major methods used in the reconstruction of paleoclimates for practical use by ecologists. Special attention is given to terrestrial proxies, isotopic indicators of environmental change, and age-modeling for the quaternary period.
