Lower Meuse Paleoflood Record Reveals NAO-Driven Decadal to Multi-Centennial Variability

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 18, 28 September 2025.
A central challenge in assessing climate-driven flood regimes is constructing long-term paleoflood records with sufficient temporal resolution to identify both short- and long-term variability.

River connectivity and climate behind the long-term evolution of tropical American floodplain lakes. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2021
We present a multi‐proxy approach on short sedimentary cores form two neotropical flood plain lakes associated with the Magdalena River, Colombia, to study temporal variation in diatoms, sediment geochemistry and climate. We proposed that lake hydrological connectivity to the Magdalena River is a main factor controlling lake long‐term responses to ...

Causative classification of river flood events. [PDF]

open access: yesWIREs Water, 2019
Different perspectives and scales of existing causative classifications of river flood events. (Reprinted with permission from Bárdossy and Pegram (2011). Copyright 2011 Wiley and Nied et al. (2014). Copyright 2014 CC BY) Abstract A wide variety of processes controls the time of occurrence, duration, extent, and severity of river floods.

Monte Carlo simulation of paleofloods: information content of paleoflood data in flood-frequency analysis

open access: yes, 2000
Paleoflood hydrology is a technique for assessing the magnitude and frequency of floods in bedrock canyons. I calculate effects of adding paleoflood data to gaging data on estimating low return-period quantiles using peak discharge sample statistics from

Understanding the Contributions of Paleo‐Informed Natural Variability and Climate Changes to Hydroclimate Extremes in the San Joaquin Valley of California

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 11, Issue 11, November 2023., 2023
Abstract To aid California's water sector to better understand and manage future climate extremes, we present a method for creating a regionally consistent ensemble of plausible daily future climate and streamflow scenarios that represent natural climate variability captured in a network of tree‐ring chronologies, and then embed anthropogenic climate ...

A 247‐year tree‐ring reconstruction of spring temperature and relation to spring flooding in eastern boreal Canada

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 42, Issue 12, Page 6479-6498, October 2022., 2022
Charred jack pine snags provide unique paleoclimatic data in the Canadian boreal forest. Spring temperature reconstructions from these trees indicate cooler than average springs at the end of the Little Ice Age, with multi‐decadal cold and warm phases, before transitioning to warmer springs since approximately 1940.

Antecedent Topography and Sediment Dispersal: The Influence of Geologically Instantaneous Events on Basin Fill Patterns

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 127, Issue 6, June 2022., 2022
Abstract Favorable topographic gradients and channel bed aggradation are often cited as primers for river channel avulsion. Sylhet Basin in Bangladesh subsides relatively rapidly and presents a topographically favorable channel course for the Brahmaputra River.

Interannual to millennial‐scale variability of River Ammer floods and its relationship with solar forcing

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 41, Issue S1, Page E644-E655, January 2021., 2021
Time series of observed River Ammer flood years for the period 1926–1999 AD (blue bars) and years with a flood layer in Lake Ammer sediments (red bars) for the period 3550 BP to 1999 AD show pronounced interannual to millennial scale variations. Part of this variability is related to solar irradiance forcing on atmospheric blocking frequency over ...

Grain Size and Magnetic Characteristics of Floodplain Sediments in a Small Watershed at Northern Guangdong: Implications for Paleoflood Identification

open access: yesRedai dili, 2023
With the intensification of global climate change, floods caused by typhoons and heavy rainfall occur frequently. It is important to effectively identify flood events within sedimentary records to study the flood frequency patterns. Currently, grain size
