Plague, Paleogenetics, and the Boundaries of the Discipline of History

2020
The perceived effects of the Justinianic Plague are hotly debated. While some scholars believe it killed as much as half the population of the Mediterranean world and contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire, others argue that it was inconsequential demographically and was not a significant factor in any large-scale historical processes.

Paleogenetical study of pre‐Columbian samples from Pampa Grande (Salta, Argentina)

American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 2009
AbstractAncient DNA recovered from 21 individuals excavated from burial sites in the Pampa Grande (PG) region (Salta province) of North‐Western Argentina (NWA) was analyzed using various genetic markers (mitochondrial DNA, autosomal STRs, and Y chromosomal STRs). The results were compared to ancient and modern DNA from various populations in the Andean

Spectral breakdown of morphometric chronoclines—A Paleogenetic problem

Journal of the International Association for Mathematical Geology, 1970
Data on Nigerian Paleogene marine ostracodes are used to demonstrate that morphologic characters of species of the same group tend to vary parallelly through time in response to environmental stimuli. A model for the spectral breakdown of total morphometric variability into components of variation, possibly identifiable with environmental and genetic ...

Comments on Holmquist's theory for paleogenetics

Journal of Molecular Evolution, 1975
The notion of the probability of back mutation is introduced and the method of probability generating functions is used in order to simplify and unify the Holmquist's (1972) investigation of the effect of multiple hits on nucleotide differences between homologous DNAs. We obtain explicit expressions for the distribution of the number of hit nucleotide

[Molecular paleogenetics of primates].

Genetika, 1997
Genetic distances between the major members of the primate order obtained from data on blood serum antigens, amino-acid sequences of intracell proteins, electrophoretic gene markers, and nucleotide sequences of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA are analyzed. Conclusions regarding phylogeny and systematics of the primate order based on evidence of molecular

Evidence of Helminth Infection in Guanche Mummies: Integrating Paleoparasitological and Paleogenetic Investigations

Journal of Parasitology, 2016
The Guanches, ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands, Spain, practiced mummification of their dead. A paleoparasitological and paleogenetic analysis was conducted on mummified bodies (n = 6) (AD 1200, Cal BP 750) belonging to the Guanche culture from Gran Canaria Island.

Covariance structure and morphometric analysis—A contribution to paleogenetics

Journal of the International Association for Mathematical Geology, 1969
A method of analysis of covariance structure proposed by A. P. Dempster complements, in some respects, a recently suggested procedure by the author. The method is based on the comparison of ratios of generalized statistical distances and distancelike quantities.

Histological and paleogenetic analyses of two pre-Columbian mummies

2018
Several pre-Columbian mummies are preserved in the Museum of Anthropology of the University of Florence. These bodies were brought from South America to Italy in the second half of the 19th century. We studied the natural mummies of two adults dated back between 1410 and 1530.
