Trace Metals as Paleoredox and Paleoproductivity Proxies: An Update

Chemical Geology, 2006
Abstract This paper is a synthesis of the use of selected trace elements as proxies for reconstruction of paleoproductivity and paleoredox conditions. Many of the trace elements considered here show variations in oxidation state and solubility as a function of the redox status of the depositional environment.

Problems With Paleoproductivity Proxies [PDF]

open access: yesPaleoceanography, 2005
Difficulties associated with reconstructing past changes in export production were highlighted recently by Averyt and Paytan (2004), who reported substantial disagreement among records developed using different paleoproductivity proxies extracted from two equatorial Pacific piston cores. Proxies included the accumulation rates of barite, excess Ba, and

An Application of Wavelet Analysis to Paleoproductivity Records From the Southern Ocean

Computers and Geosciences, 2009
We have performed wavelet analysis of the paleoproductivity records from the southeastern Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. In particular, we have applied a continuous wavelet transform to the phosphorus-to-titanium (P/Ti) ratios obtained from the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 1089 and 1094 over the past ~600kyr, and computed their wavelet ...

Sponge Borehole Size as a Relative Measure of Bioerosion and Paleoproductivity

Lethaia, 1996
Bioerosion intensity has been proposed as a measure of paleoproductivity in fossil reefs, but it is difficult to measure directly because fossil corals are often incomplete and because it is difticult to infer the length of time a given coral was exposed to bioeroding organisms.

Millennial Scale Coccolithophore Paleoproductivity and Surface Water Changes Between 445 and 360 Ka (Marine Isotope Stages 12/11) in the Northeast Atlantic

open access: yesPalaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 2013
A high resolution coccolithophore study was carried out in order to improve the understanding of the paleoceanographic evolution and changes in paleoproductivity occurring off the Iberian Margin (IM) between 445 and 360 ka, i.e.

Relationship of Benthic Foraminiferal Diversity to Paleoproductivity in the Neogene Caribbean

Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 2007
Abstract Diversity trends 8.3–2.5 Ma in Caribbean deep-sea foraminifera, as interpreted from the indices Fisher's α and the Information Index [H(S)] parallel paleoproductivity proxies (benthic foraminiferal infaunal/epifaunal species ratio, benthic foraminifer accumulation rates and flux of organic carbon to the seafloor).

Terrigenous input and paleoproductivity in the Southern Ocean

Paleoceanography, 2001
The geochemistry of several sites along the Polar Front Zone of the Southern Ocean revealed significant changes in terrigenous input and productivity on glacial timescales. Our records indicate concentrations and fluxes of terrigenous elements (i.e., Fe, Al, and Ti) are low during interglacials and increase tenfold to twentyfold during glacials ...
