Paleosalinity: Confidence Limits and Future Applications

open access: yesMarine Geology, 2000
Error propagation is investigated through the only commonly applied technique for reconstruction of paleosalinity, based on oxygen isotope residuals. Although this technique is known to be fairly inaccurate, there remained a need for thorough assessment of confidence limits in a variety of global settings.

Paleosalinity of Permian Nonmarine Deposits in Antarctica

Science, 1968
Argillites of the Permian Mount Glossopteris Formation were analyzed for clay minerals, trace elements, and phosphate paleosalinity. Mainly degraded and stripped illites occur. The determined salinity range, 29 to 33 parts per mille is designated the "paleosalinity signature" of the formation.

Effect of Paleosalinity and Maturity on the Distribution of Dimethyl-MTTCs

Petroleum Science and Technology, 2018
The effect of paleosalinity and thermal maturity on the distribution of dimethyl-MTTCs in sediments is still uncertain.

Strontium Isotopic Composition of Estuarine Sediments as Paleosalinity-Paleoclimate Indicator

Science, 1992
The strontium isotopic composition of biogenic precipitates that occur in estuarine sediments can be used as proxy indicator of paleosalinity and for assessing precipitation and river discharge rates over thousands of years. In the San Francisco Bay estuary, river water with low 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ...

High precision paleosalinity determination from measured porewater density

open access: yesMarine Chemistry, 2020
Abstract We have developed a density-based method for determining porewater salinity that can be performed shipboard on small volume samples with greater efficiency and precision than the currently available shore-based chloride titration technique.

GEOCHEMICAL METHOD FOR DETERMINING PALEOSALINITY

Clays and clay minerals (National Conference on Clays and Clay Minerals), 1959
AbstractThe boron content of sea water increases linearly with salinity within the range tested. The boron content of the illite minerals in the clay mineral size fraction of many types of sedimentary rocks has been shown to increase with the “geologically known” salinity prevailing during deposition of the rocks.

On the Reconstruction of Paleosalinities

1999
Methods potentially useful for paleosalinity reconstructions are summarized and applied to surface sediments and two cores from the Atlantic. The first approach is based on the oxygen isotope ratio in calcite tests of planktonic foraminifera in conjunction with an independent sea-surface temperature estimate.
