Calculation of Paleosalinities from Boron and Clay Mineral Data
AAPG Bulletin, 1971Abstract The validity of boron as a salinity index has been established by numerous studies over the past 2 decades. It is known that all the major clay minerals may contain boron which can be correlated with paleosalinity. However, under given conditions, illites will contain the most boron and kaolinites the least.

Boron as Paleosalinity Indicator Not Affected by Carbon in Clay Fractions: ABSTRACT
AAPG Bulletin, 1966A recently reported inverse correlation between boron and organic carbon in rocks suggests that development of illite-organic complexes during deposition may inhibit boron absorption. The validity of boron as a paleosalinity indicator consequently has been questioned.

The Use of Boron Concentrations in Fossil Materials as a Paleosalinity Indicator
1979The ¹⁰B(n,α) ⁷Li nuclear reaction has been used in conjunction with alpha-sensitive plastic track detectors to determine boron concentrations in various biologically precipitated minerals. A correlation between the boron concentration in the water in which the precipitating organisms grew and the boron concentration in the materials analyzed was found ...

Early Post-Depositional Preservation of Paleosalinity, A Mathematical Approach: ABSTRACT
AAPG Bulletin, 1966Early alteration of interstitial water can appreciably hasten sediment diagenesis; this is especially true for calcareous deposits. Thus, from a theoretical standpoint, it is of interest to determine if "original" interstitial water can be preserved as a paleosalinity in areas where post-depositional bottom-water salinity changes characteristically ...
