Late Pleistocene‐Holocene Paleosecular Variation Dating of Cave Sediments: Insights From Grotta Romanelli (Apulia, Italy)

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Grotta Romanelli, located in southern Italy, is a natural coastal cave renowned for its exceptional stratigraphical record and its critical role in understanding the Middle Pleistocene‐Holocene geomorphological and paleoenvironmental evolution of the ...

Bayesian Inference of Local Paleosecular Variation from Sparse Paleomagnetic Data

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 2, February 2026.
We introduce a novel Bayesian method to construct local paleosecular variation (PSV) curves. By modeling the geomagnetic field as a Gaussian process, global models can be incorporated as informative prior distributions.

Assessing Paleosecular Variation Averaging and Correcting Paleomagnetic Inclination Shallowing

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth
AbstractThis paper addresses one of the critical questions of scientific inquiry: How do we know when a given data set is representative of the phenomenon being examined? For paleomagnetists, the question is often whether a particular data set sufficiently averaged paleosecular variation (PSV).

Palaeomagnetism of the Upper Miocene- Lower Pliocene lavas from the East Carpathians: contribution to the paleosecular variation of geomagnetic field. [PDF]

open access: yesSci Rep, 2016
Investigations of the paleosecular variation of the geomagnetic field on geological timescales depend on globally distributed data sets from lava flows. We report new paleomagnetic results from lava flows of the East Carpathian Mountains (23.6°E, 46.4°N)

Geophysical insights from the first geomagnetic field absolute intensity curve for central Asia (2200BCE–2000CE), and implications for archaeomagnetic dating [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
Until now, the lack of high-quality paleointensity data has left Central Asia as a major gap in global and regional reconstructions of geomagnetic field intensity variations.

Speleothems as Magnetic Archives: Paleosecular Variation and a Relative Paleointensity Record From a Portuguese Speleothem

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2018
We provide a high‐resolution and complete paleomagnetic study from a middle‐Holocene (~4,100–3,300 years Before Common Era, BCE) dome‐shaped speleothem (SPAIV) from Algarve, Portugal.

Updated Iberian Archeomagnetic Catalogue: New Full Vector Paleosecular Variation Curve for the Last Three Millennia

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2018
In this work, we present 16 directional and 27 intensity high‐quality values from Iberia. Moreover, we have updated the Iberian archeomagnetic catalogue published more than 10 years ago with a considerable increase in the database.

A High‐Resolution Paleosecular Variation Record for Marine Isotope Stage 6 From Southeastern Black Sea Sediments

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2021
A full‐vector paleosecular variation (PSV) record (inclination, declination, and relative paleointensity) from the pen‐ultimate glacial (130–180 ka) could be constructed from a total of 12 sediment cores recovered from the Arkhangelsky Ridge in the SE ...

Long-term persistency of a strong non-dipole field in the South Atlantic [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
Earth’s magnetic field exhibits a dominant dipole morphology. Notwithstanding, significant deviations from the dipole are evident today, particularly the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), characterized by anomalously low-field intensity and high directional ...
