Paleostress analysis from image logs using pinnate joints as slip indicators

AAPG Bulletin, 2009
The slip direction and slip sense of a fault constrain the orientation of the stress field that caused the fault to slip. Inversion of such slip data for populations of minor faults to determine ancient stress fields is a well-established technique in structural geology.

Neogene evolution of the Sorbas basin (SE Spain) determined by paleostress analysis

Tectonophysics, 1996
Abstract The Neogene subsidence history of the Sorbas basin, situated in the Internal Zone of the Betic Cordilleras of southeastern Spain, is strongly controlled by strike-slip deformation. The sedimentary sequence of the basin offers a good control on the timing of separate phases of fault activation.

Paleostress Analysis from Fractures in Kalosh Anticline, Kurdistan Region, North‒East of Iraq

Geotectonics, 2020
Fractures analysis carried out throughout traverses across Kalosh anticline. The anticline is located ~30 km south of Sulaimaniyah city, Kurdistan region, NE Iraq. It extends NW‒SE for ~17 km within the high folded zone of the northwestern segment of the Zagros Foreland Fold Thrust Belt.

PALEOSTRESS ANALYSIS OF KAROO SUPERGROUP OF THE TSHIPISE-PAFURI BASIN, SOUTH AFRICA

South African Journal of Geology, 2015
The Tshipise-Pafuri basin is located in the Limpopo Province, north-eastern South Africa. This paper presents the first paleostress-analysis results from fault-slip data on the sedimentary rocks of Karoo Supergroup of late Palaeozoic to early Mesozoic in Tshipise-Pafuri basin.

Romsa: a basic program for paleostress analysis using fault-striation data

Computers & Geosciences, 1988
ROMSA allows the directions of principal stresses (σ1 > σ2 > σ3) to be estimated from data consisting of orientations of fault planes and their associated slip directions. The calculations make use of the well-known compressional and dilatational quadrantal arrangement of potential σ1 and σ3 directions.

Combined kinematic and paleostress analysis of fault-slip data: The Multiple-slip method

Journal of Structural Geology, 2008
We describe the Multiple-slip method for the construction of the displacement gradient tensor, which describes the faulting-related deformation of the region. Three elements must be known for each fault: (1) the fault plane orientation, (2) the slip direction, and (3) the number of parallel faults in the same size range.

The kink-band triangle: a triangular plot for paleostress analysis from kink-bands

Journal of Structural Geology, 1998
A kink-band can be graphically represented as a point on an equilateral triangle whose vertices define the angles between external foliation and kink plane, between internal foliation and kink plane, and between internal- and external-foliations. Four typical deformation paths that correspond to the four modes of kink-band growth can be discerned on ...

Paleostress Analysis of Karoo Supergroup of the Tshipise-Pafuri Basin, South Africa: Comment

South African Journal of Geology, 2015
Malaza et al. (2015) present a rare and important attempt at paleostress analysis of faults in the Karoo Supergroup in the Limpopo Province. Paleostress analyses use field observations of fracture and fault orientations, and inferred fault kinematics, to derive the instantaneous stress field(s) responsible for deformation.

Determination of 3D Paleostress Systems: An Additional Technique for Basin Analysis: ABSTRACT

AAPG Bulletin, 1988
The present structure of the western Mediterranean has been largely determined by several phases of rifting and oceanic spreading which began during the Oligocene. The main rifting event took place during the middle Oligocene-earliest Miocene. This is indicated by structural, stratigraphic, metamorphic, and volcanic data.
