An experimental assessment of the impact of gear saturation on an abundance index for an exploited rock lobster resource

open access: yes, 2016
Increased fishing effort may downwardly bias indices of abundance, such as catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE), due to gear saturation. A field experiment was developed to assess gear-saturation effects on an index of relative abundance used for stock ...

Growth of spiny lobster Palinurus gilchristi (Decapoda: Palinuridae) off South Africa

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Marine Science, 1997
Growth of spiny lobster Palinurus gilchristi was investigated on four traditional lobster fishing grounds, Agulhas Bank, St Francis, Port Elizabeth and Port Alfred, using tagging data. Of 11 144 individuals tagged insix tagging sessions between 1988 and 1993, 1 031 (9.25 %) were recaptured by May 1995. Most P.

Fecundity of spiny lobsterPalinurus gilchristi(Decapoda: Palinuridae) off South Africa

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Marine Science, 2005
Fecundity of spiny lobster Palinurus gilchristi was investigated on traditional lobster fishing grounds on the Agulhas Bank, from Mossel Bay to Algoa Bay, and Port Alfred, based on early- and late-stage egg masses collected from 415 mature females (58–118mm carapace length, CL).

Under-reporting of Catches of South Coast Rock LobsterPalinurus Gilchristi, with Implications for the Assessment and Management of the Fishery

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Marine Science, 2003
Under-reporting of fishery catches can severely affect the precision of stock assessment estimates, which require accurate information on catch and catch rate. Under-reporting of catches of South Coast rock lobster Palinurus gilchristi over the past decade was estimated from verified daily catch rates and the number of days spent at sea by the ...

DEVELOPMENT OF A PLEOPOD INDEX TO ASSESS THE MOULTING SEASON OF ROCK LOBSTER, PALINURUS GILCHRISTI (DECAPODA, PALINURIDAE) OFF SOUTH AFRICA

open access: yesCrustaceana, 2001
The setagenic development of the pleopods of rock lobster Palinurus gilchristi was investigated as a method to identify moult stages and define a moulting season. Seven discrete moulting stages and substages were found in captive lobsters. A premoult D0 stage was followed by a D1′ stage 30- 46 days prior to moulting, progressing to stages D1′′′ (23-24 ...

Occurrence of an External Spermatophoric Mass in the Spiny Lobster, Palinurus Gilchristi (Decapoda, Palinuridea)

Crustaceana, 1969
Within the family Palinuridae, external fertilization is only known to occur in the genus Panulirus in which the conspicuous spermatophoric mass with a hard protective matrix is well known. External spermatophores have not been recorded in other palinurid genera.

Primi dati sulla cariologia di Palinurus gilchristi (Crustacea, Decapoda)

2004
We studied the mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of Palinurus gilchristi (Decapoda, Palinuridae). C and fluorochrome banding allowed to localize and characterize constitutive heterochromatin. Supernumerary chromosomes have been identified, their presence could account for the numerical variability observed.
