Paludiculture as a critical sustainability innovation mission
Research Policy, 2020Abstract Paludiculture is the productive use of wet and rewetted peatlands. A major motivation is climate change, because drained peatlands contribute significant amounts of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The study presents an analysis of paludiculture as a critical sustainability innovation mission in the making.

Paludiculture as a sustainable land use alternative for tropical peatlands: A review
Science of the Total Environment, 2021Peatlands cover approximately 4.2 million km2 of terrestrial land surface and store up to 700 Pg of terrestrial carbon. Preserving the carbon stocks in peatland is therefore crucial for climate change mitigation. Under natural conditions, peatland carbon storage is maintained by moist peat conditions, which decreases decomposition and encourages peat ...

Paludiculture is the productive use of wet peatlands. In contrast to drained peatlands, rewetted peatlands have water levels close to surface, which ensure regulating services similar to those in natural peatland ecosystems.

Effects of topsoil removal on greenhouse gas exchange of fen paludicultures
2021
Drainage is necessary for conventional agriculture on peatlands, but this practice causes high emissions of the greenhouse gases (GHG) carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. Paludiculture is an option to mitigate these adverse environmental effects while maintaining productive land use.

Think rural! Think paludicultural!

Assessing nutrient responses and biomass quality for selection of appropriate paludiculture crops
Science of The Total Environment, 2019Tall wetland graminoids with rapid growth, high productivity and wide tolerance of biotic and abiotic stresses are potentially valuable bioenergy crops, especially when grown in rewetted peat soils for biomass (paludiculture). Using wetland plants as renewable bioenergy crops instead of fossil fuels has the ecological benefits of reducing greenhouse ...
