Predatory Functional Morphology in Raptors: Interdigital Variation in Talon Size Is Related to Prey Restraint and Immobilisation Technique [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2009
Despite the ubiquity of raptors in terrestrial ecosystems, many aspects of their predatory behaviour remain poorly understood. Surprisingly little is known about the morphology of raptor talons and how they are employed during feeding behaviour.

Observations on alloparental care of fledglings in Osprey Pandion haliaetus (Aves, Pandionidae)

open access: yesVieraea Folia scientiarum biologicarum canariensium, 2011
We describe the adoption and alloparental care of fledglings by an Osprey pair during two consecutive breeding seasons (2008-09) in the small and semi-colonial cliff nesting population of Tenerife (Canary Islands). The intruding broods (two fledglings each year) switched nest a few days after fledging (≤ 10 days in 2008 and ≤ 6 in 2009).
