Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

The Effect of Remittances on Imports in Eight Latin-American Countries

open access: yesReview of Economic Analysis, 2020
Remittances are an important source of external resources for developing countries.  These transfers may increase the levels of consumption and capital formation in these economies. This paper examines the economic impact of international remittances on

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

The dynamics of firm growth, size and liquidity constraints for Botswana listed firms

open access: yesJurnal Perspektif Pembiayaan dan Pembangunan Daerah, 2019
The study employed panel Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model and panel Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model to examine the dynamic linkages among firm growth, liquidity and firm size. Specifically the study sought to: examine the key variables explaining the

ABL kinase‐dependent phosphorylation of SH proteins promotes their direct interaction with CRK family SH2 domains

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
CT10 regulator of kinase (CRK) and CRK‐Like (CRKL) are signaling adaptors driving cell adhesion, motility, differentiation, and proliferation. SH2‐domain containing (SH) proteins are enriched in YXXP motifs which when phosphorylated create preferred binding sites for CRK family SH2 domains.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Panel VAR models with interactive fixed effects

open access: yesThe Econometrics Journal, 2020
SummaryIn the literature, a common feature of panel models with interactive fixed effects is that they model a univariate variable. In this regard, they are incapable of addressing dynamic and simultaneous interactions among a set of macroeconomic variables, a problem that falls within the realm of structural analysis.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.
