Beauv. comprises approximately 39 species of grasses; one is confined to tropical Asia, Africa, and Australia; the remainder are widely distributed in the American tropics. Ichnanthus is closely related to Echinolaena and Oplismenus, and to both section Panicum and the "Stolonifera" group of Panicum.

Nomenclatural notes on Trichanthecium (Poaceae, Panicoideae, Paniceae)
PhytotaxaTrichanthecium is a genus of panicoid grasses that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas, continental Africa and Madagascar, comprising 52 species. Revisions of herbaria materials revealed the need for new typifications of names associated with Trichanthecium to stabilize the nomenclature of the genus.

Cunningham is resolved as Paspalum vaginatum Sw.; confusion with Zoysia sp. attributable to Hooker is clarified. No solution to the exact disposition of Paspalum tenax Trin. can be proffered, despite extensive enquiries; it remains in Incertae Sedis.

Genera of the North American Paniceae (Poaceae: Panicoideae)
Systematic Botany, 1988A comprehensive study of generic concepts and evaluation of taxonomic characters is presented for the Paniceae of North America. An original set of data, consisting of 409 characters recorded for 25 genera, was collected and analyzed to produce a bracketed key to the genera.
