More than anything else, the Pantanal is a land of lakes. There exists no census, but a prudent estimate would put the number of lakes in the tens of thousands. Most of them are small lakes of 500 to 1000 m diameter. On the lands of one farm alone (Fazenda Nhumirim), there are some 100 such small lakes (Mourao et al., 1988).
