Epidermoid cysts in two lions (Panthera leo)

Abstract Epidermoid cysts of hair-follicle origin with concomitant atrichia and testicular hypoplasia, were seen in two male lions of the Trichur Zoo. The lions were litter mates and they became completely hairless by the third month of life and developed numerous skin nodules which became hyperpigmented. The ages at death were 14 and 16 years.

Fibrocartilaginous Embolic Myelopathy in a Lion (Panthera leo)

A 6-yr-old, captive-born male lion (Panthera leo) with a 3-day history of acute and nonprogressive spastic paraplegia of the hind limbs and flaccid paraplegia of the left forelimb, was submitted for postmortem examination. Before and after the onset of the neurologic signs, neither hematologic nor other significant clinical abnormalities were observed.

Malignant lymphoma has become an increasingly recognized problem in African lions ( Panthera leo). Eleven African lions (9 male and 2 female) with clinical signs and gross and microscopic lesions of malignant lymphoma were evaluated in this study. All animals were older adults, ranging in age from 14 to 19 years.

The aim of the thesis was to evaluate possibilities of morphological differentiation of skulls of lions (Panthera leo) and tigers (Panthera tigris) for the purposes of control authorities supervising a trade with endangered species protected by CITES. Tiger skeletons are one of the black markets highly lucrative and plentifully traded goods.
