Identification of tiger and lion skulls: An illustrated guide for science and practice

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, Volume 54, Issue 3, Page 291-304, May 2025.
Abstract Tiger and lion bones are valuable subjects of trafficking. They can be easily interchanged. The aim of this study was to develop a methodology to quickly distinguish between tiger and lion skulls. From a number of features reported in the literature, a set of seven significant characters was identified that can be recognized even in ...

Abundant top predators increase species interaction network complexity in northeastern Chinese forests

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 4, Page 745-759, April 2025.
Our study reveals how top predators influence mammalian interaction networks by increasing complexity and redistributing interactions through indirect effects. These findings imply the important role of top predators in structuring communities, offering novel insights into the conservation and management of mammal communities in northeastern China ...

Spatial Heterogeneity of Habitat Selection of Large Carnivores and Their Ungulate Prey in Proximity to Roads

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 2, February 2025.
Based on line transect survey and a monitoring network, this study examined the spatial heterogeneity of habitat selection of Amur tiger and leopard, as large carnivores, and their main ungulate prey, wild boar and roe deer, in Northeast China, by applying logistic geographically weighted regression (GWR) in conjunction with generalized linear models ...

Pose‐Guided Re‐Identification of Amur Tigers Under Wild Environmental Constraints

open access: yesIET Image Processing, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
The framework of pose‐guided dual‐branch re‐identification network (PDBRNet). Our approach integrates pose estimation to guide feature disentanglement and alignment, crucial for accurate re‐identification, while an image preprocessing method considering illumination factors mitigates lighting variations' impact on accuracy. ABSTRACT The conservation of

Geographical Distribution of Carnivore Hosts and Genotypes of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) Worldwide: A Scoping Review and Spatial Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Background: Emerging viral diseases are spreading to new geographic locations, influenced by human activities and climate change. Morbillivirus canis (also known as canine distemper virus, CDV), the etiological agent of CD, is distributed worldwide and shared between wild and domestic animals.

Spatial population distribution dynamics of big cats and ungulates with seasonal and disturbance changes in temperate natural forest

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Wildlife conservation and management in human-dominated landscapes are major concerns for wildlife ecologists and managers. The dynamics of human disturbance, combined with seasonal limitations in the availability of nutritious foods, may restrict ...
