Approximately 350 neurones are present at the base of each hair, and dendrites pass up into the hair lumen. These dendrites end one-third of the distance to the hair tip.

Perception of odor mixtures by the spiny lobster Panulirus argus
Chemical Senses, 1994We used spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus) in a discrimination learning procedure with aversive conditioning to examine their behavioral discrimination of adenosine-5'-monophosphate (AMP), betaine, L-cysteine and their binary mixtures. Our results show that spiny lobsters can clearly discriminate among binary mixtures and their components.
