Drivers of reef fish assemblages in an upwelling region from the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 98, Issue 4, Page 1074-1090, April 2021., 2021
Abstract Reef fish assemblages are exposed to a wide range of anthropogenic threats as well as chronic natural disturbances. In upwelling regions, for example, there is a seasonal influx of cool nutrient‐rich waters that may shape the structure and composition of reef fish assemblages.

Generation and propagation of anticyclonic rings in the Gulf of Papagayo

open access: yesInternational Journal of Remote Sensing, 2004
Lagrangian drifting buoys, local meteorological stations and AVHRR data were used to describe the generation and propagation of anticyclonic rings in the Gulf of Papagayo during the upwelling season in 1996. Some observations were consistent with two generation mechanisms previously proposed: forcing by inertially rotating Papagayo wind jets and ...

Factors that modulate the seasonal variability of the sea surface temperature of the Eastern Tropical Pacific [PDF]

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 2009
Seasonal variability of the sea surface temperature (SST) in the Eastern Tropical Pacific were studied. For this purpose the following data were analyzed: SST and wind data from the Comprehensive Ocean–Atmosphere Data Set from 1978 to 1997, temperature ...

Impact of upwelling events on the sea water carbonate chemistry and dissolved oxygen concentration in the Gulf of Papagayo (Culebra Bay), Costa Rica: Implications for coral reefs

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2012
The Gulf of Papagayo, Pacific coast of Costa Rica, is one of the three seasonal upwelling areas of Mesoamerica. In April 2009, a 29-hour experiment was carried out at the pier of the Marina Papagayo, Culebra Bay.

Roles of Surface Latent Heat Flux and Gravity Waves in Offshore MCS Development in the Coastal Eastern Tropical Pacific

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 7, 16 April 2026.
Abstract The eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) coastal region, one of the rainiest places on Earth, is characterized by distinct diurnal offshore rainfall propagation primarily driven by mesoscale convective systems (MCSs). Previous studies have shown that MCS initiation in this region peaks in the early morning, with diurnally generated gravity waves ...
