How big is a boulder? The importance of boulder definition choice in earth science research and river management

How big does a grain need to be to be a boulder? And why does it matter? We compare five definitions for minimum boulder size based on fixed sizes and relative to system power and site grain size. We also survey river restoration practitioners. We find that definition matters, even reversing some associations between boulder variables.
