ABSTRACTCardinal neon Paracheirodon axelrodi and bloodfin tetra Aphyocharax anisitsi are two species of characids with high trade value as ornamental fish in South America. Although both species inhabit middle water layers, cardinal neon exhibits a tropical distribution and bloodfin tetra a subtropical one.

This study investigated the acute toxicity of nickel (Ni) to cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi), within the three main water types of the Amazon basin: black (Rio Negro), white (Rio Solimões) and clear (Rio Tapajós) during the wet and dry season at pH 7 (representative of white and clear rivers) and pH 4 (representative of black waters).

Mechanisms of Na(+) uptake, ammonia excretion, and their potential linkage were investigated in three characids (cardinal, hemigrammus, moenkhausia tetras), using radiotracer flux techniques to study the unidirectional influx (J in), efflux (J out), and net flux rates (J net) of Na(+) and Cl(-), and the net excretion rate of ammonia (J Amm).
