NARCOLEPTIC SYNDROME AND PARADOXICAL SLEEP
Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, 1966SummaryIn order to elucidate the mechanism of the narcoleptic syndrome, the course of all‐night sleep was investigated by means of poly graphic methods or by using inducing stimuli. Further study on each symptom was performed in relation to the sleep mechanism using similar methods. Thirty‐three cases of typical narcolepsy were examined.

Paradoxical sleep-promoting effects of brain extract from paradoxical sleep-deprived rats
Brain Research Bulletin, 1990Brain extract was obtained from whole brains of donor rats following four days of paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD). Intraperitoneal injection of this brain extract in normal (i.e., not pretreated) recipient rats led to a significant increase of paradoxical sleep (PS) which was beginning at the third hour postinjection and still present on the day ...

Effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation in the rabbit
Physiology & Behavior, 1986The effects of nonpharmacologically-induced deprivation of paradoxical sleep for a 24 hour period were studied in rabbits. Response characteristics commonly associated with the deprivation procedure in other species were observed, as well as features apparently peculiar to the rabbit.

Neurons in Paradoxical Sleep and Motivated Behavior
Science, 1967Single-cell recordings were taken with electrodes permanently implanted in unrestrained rats during normal sleep, paradoxical sleep, quiet awake, and highly motivated awake periods. In most areas, neuronal activity increased when normal sleep changed to paradoxical sleep.

The orthodox-paradoxical sleep cycle in the rat
Experientia, 1976Under the postulated existence of a mechanism regulating the NREM sleep- REM sleep sequence and a reset of this mechanism by long awakenings, the variability of sleep cycle in the rat was studied. Awakenings of various durations were included in the definition of sleep cycle boundaries.

Paradoxical sleep and memory storage processes
Behavioral Biology, 1977This paper advances the view that during the paradoxical sleep (PS) phase, the brain sets in motion a “chain-of-events” that is necessary for learning ability and that these events are an integral component of memory storage processes. The evidence supporting the position taken in this paper comes from experiments showing that: (1) PS deprivation (PSD),

Paradoxical sleep in the chick (Gallus domesticus)
Behavioral Biology, 1974The states of sleep and wakefulness in chicks ( Gallus domesticus ), were classified by computerized monitoring of multiple unit activity, electroencephalographic, and electromyographic recordings. Chicks of 1 day, 1 week, 1 mo, and 4 mo of age, were monitored for Paradoxical Sleep (PS) on a 12 hr day-12 hr night cycle. No significant differences could

Paradoxical sleep and coping with environmental change
Behavioural Brain Research, 1983Long-term sleep recordings of mice from 3 inbred strains showed that the amount of time spent in sleep over successive 24-h periods varied as the subjects adapted to experimental conditions. A sinusoidal type variation, with a period of about 15 days, modulating the basic trends in sleep times is described; but the principal finding of this study ...

[Thermophysiology of the paradoxical sleep].
Rossiiskii fiziologicheskii zhurnal imeni I.M. Sechenova, 2011Data on interactions between the paradoxical sleep (PS) and thermoregulation under thermo-comfortable and extreme conditions (in high and low temperatures, forced and spontaneous fasting, acclimation to cold and acclimation to natural winter conditions) are reviewed.

Conditioned induction of paradoxical sleep in the rabbit
Experimental Neurology, 1964Abstract Earlier electroencephalographic studies showed that sleep, including both spindle-slow wave and paradoxical phases, could be induced in estrogen-primed ovariectomized rabbits by low-frequency (5 cycle/sec) electrical stimulation of the hypothalamus or limbic system and that the threshold varied with the hormonal status of the animal.
