Repair of paraesophageal hernias
The American Journal of Surgery, 1999Three years ago we proposed the use of laparoscopy and systematic addition of an antireflux procedure to repair paraesophageal hernias. We now present an analysis of the outcome on patients and the evolution of the technique proposed.Symptoms and esophageal function were prospectively collected and followed in 41 consecutive patients treated over a 4 ...

Laparoscopic Paraesophageal Hernia Repair
Advances in Surgery, 2007Paraesophageal hernias are difficult surgical problems that often need repair. Meticulous work-up and surgical technique are required for optimal results. A laparoscopic approach is associated with reduced morbidity and, if combined with the use of biologic mesh, provides relief of symptoms and a durable repair.

Management of Paraesophageal Hernias
Surgical Clinics of North America, 2005A tailored approach to the management of patients who have para-esophageal herniation appears to be the best policy. No one approach can universally apply to this patient population if optimal therapy, quality of life, and overall survival are to be optimized.

Iatrogenic paraesophageal hiatus hernia
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1990Between January 1970 and January 1990, 101 patients with paraesophageal hiatus hernias were operated on at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center. Thirteen patients had hernias that were identified as being iatrogenic in origin, a prevalence of 13%. Ten hernias were secondary to antireflux procedures, and esophagomyotomy, esophagogastrectomy, and placement of

We have reviewed our experience with eight patients with paraesophageal hernias surgically repaired at this institution during an 18-month period. Three of these patients required emergent operation, and although the morbidity was higher in this group than in those undergoing elective surgery, no mortalities occurred in either group.

Paraesophageal Hernias with Perforation
Thoracic Surgery ClinicsAcute gastric volvulus presents with the classic triad of severe epigastric pain, vomiting, and difficulty or inability to pass a nasogastric tube. It can be complicated by strangulation and perforation which are associated with high mortality rates. Quick diagnosis and attempt at decompression is paramount.

Management of Paraesophageal Hernias
Thoracic Surgery ClinicsParaesophageal hernias are classified according to the altered anatomic relationships between the gastroesophageal junction or stomach and the diaphragmatic hiatus. Herniation of these structures into the mediastinum may produce common complaints such as reflux, chest pain, and dysphagia.

Laparoscopic Paraesophageal Hernia Repair
Journal of Laparoendoscopic Surgery, 1992Paraesophageal hernias frequently present in an elderly population. Laparoscopic repair was performed in two patients. Each patient had an uncomplicated postop course with complete relief of their symptoms. The surgical technique utilized is presented. Laparoscopic paraesophageal hernia repair offers an alternative procedure to a group of patients who ...
